Henry Howard-Sneyd, Sotheby’s Vice Chairman, Asian Art and the lead auctioneer, commented: “For the fourth consecutive year Sotheby’s 2014 Asian Art auctions in New York have broken the $100 million barrier for the year. With a series of five sales including a blockbuster Classical Chinese Paintings auction, we once again demonstrated Sotheby’s market leadership in this field. Our long-standing relationships meant we were able to source property from many of the most world’s most distinguished private groupings, and collectors flocked to New York from across Asia to compete with an international clientele for property spanning 3,000 years of Asian Art.”
Sotheby’s departments of Chinese, Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Works of Art are delighted to announce our upcoming auction of Buddhist and devotional art, Images of Enlightenment: Devotional Works of Art and Paintings, this September during Asia Week. Images of Enlightenment: Devotional Works of Art and Paintings will feature a curated selection of very fine Buddhist artworks with storied provenance from the ancient region of Gandhara, Nepal, Tibet, Mongolia, China and Japan. The sale will be led by a large and magnificent 15th century Nepalese gilt-copper sculpture of Indra from the historic collections of the Dukes of Northumberland, property from which will be sold by Sotheby’s in various locations throughout 2014; as well as an exquisite Yongle mark and period gilt-bronze depicting Raktayamari with Consort. Highlights include an elegant group of Qianlong altar garniture; ritual objects; early stone sculpture; as well as a fine selection of Chinese and Tibetan bronzes and thangka paintings.
