Among the leading artists of the 20th century, Alexander Calder achieved inimitable playfulness, wit and grace across a variety of media. On August 15th, Sotheby’s S|2 gallery will be transformed with the swirling forms and vibrant colors of the great master’s acclaimed works on paper in an exhibition exploring his dynamic pieces from the 1930s to the end of his life in 1976. Calder’s gouaches often tell a story and the present collection amasses a lifetime of narrative for the surrealist artist. Among them, Composition and Untitled (Plates 1 and 2) were both painted as possible designs for the summer of 1946 edition of the magazine, Style En France.
