There is a multiplicity of young voices from the post 1970s generation represented in New Ink: An Exhibition of Ink Art by Post 1970 Artists from the Yiqingzhai Collection. Sixteen artists have been selected to showcase the evolving voice of ink art: CAI Jinwei, HAO Liang, LIN Guocheng, PENG Jian, PENG Wei, XIAO Xu, YANG Yongliang, ZENG Guoqing from Mainland China; CHEUK Ka Wai, KOON Wai Bong, LAW Yuk Mui, LEUNG Ka Yin Joey and SHIEH Ka Ho Wilson from Hong Kong.
Born between 1970 and 1989, these artists came of age between 1980 and 2000. The compression of forces is undeniably dramatic in these two decades. Mainland China and Hong Kong underwent tremendous metamorphoses and experienced rapid urbanisation, the building of nationalism, economic boom, the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to China, the internet era and space exploration – all contributing to a new form of globalism. In the 21st century era, ink is reinterpreted in multiple views, given a different distance, dimension, and aesthetic qualities. What are the next sets of challenges the young generation artists will encounter and negotiate? What will be the new directions?
The sixteen artists never cease to experiment with new ideas, materials and techniques and to explore new boundaries of artistic narratives. In this exhibition, we are invited to take on a journey to the cultivating powers of imagination of these young artists who translate their voices and visions into the new horizons through the spirit of ink.
