Sotheby’s is delighted to present our strongest-ever Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale, to be held in New York on May 8th, 2013. Our sale is led by 96 works from the unparalleled Collection of Alex & Elisabeth Lewyt, featuring rare illustrated artists’ letters and jewel-like works by Renoir, Manet, Gauguin, Picasso and many others. Adding to the vast array of first-rate estate property is an expansive selection of artworks from the esteemed Collection of David C. Copley, La Jolla, California, ranging from large and beautifully preserved landscapes by Pissarro and Renoir to twentieth-century Italian masterpieces by De Chirico, Morandi and Balla.
Our superb assortment of sculpture is led by an Important Private Collection of bronzes by Arp, Moore, Maillol and others, all purchased directly from the artists or their estates. These are complimented by Barbara Hepworth’s gleaming Four Figures Waiting, a pristine lifetime cast of Rodin’s Éternel printempsand an exceedingly rare Chemeau buvant by Rembrandt Bugatti.
An exceptional offering of German and Austrian art is led by a group of six exquisite drawings by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, sold by a renowned Private Collector. Further highlights include Alexej von Jawlensky’s hypnotic Frauenkopf, Femina from a Distinguished New York Collection which also includes a world-class group of drawings by Paul Klee as well as a 1920s Léger and a chilling 1950 nude by Alberto Giacometti. The auction features a section dedicated to late works on paper by Pablo Picasso led byDeux Femmes et Homme, a true masterpiece of the artist’s late oeuvre.
We extremely proud to be offering two important canvases by Henri Le Sidaner including the previously unrecorded Intérieur, lumière de la fenêtre, to be sold by the Pittsburgh Public Schools Friends of Art Collection. Further highlights include Renoir’s Route à Berneval, an early and fully worked landscape never before seen on the market. Also on offer are Nature morte en bleu, a perfect example of Léger’s semi-abstract oils of the 1940s; En Bateau. La Promenade en Mer, a vibrant oil by Bonnard; Temple de Diane à Epheseus, a complex composition that blends Neo-classical imagery with Dalí’s typical flair; Le Pierrot sage, one of Rouault’s boldest renderings of his beloved pantomime and Jeune fille écrivant, Morisot’s intimate portrait of her daughter Julie Manet.
Sotheby’s 8 May Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sale achieved $58,296,000, just shy of its $60 million high estimate. Highlights from the sale included:
