Our Impressionist and Modern Art Works on Paper Sale achieved £14,510,325. Highlights included Vincent Van Gogh’s Water Mill at Opwetten, which sold for £1,314,500, six times its pre-sale estimate. Two classic impressionist works by Henri Le Sidaner, Les Barques and Les Vieilles Maisons, Quimperlé, also outstripped their pre-sale estimates to sell for £482,500 and £386,500 respectively.
Our return to a dedicated Works on Paper Sale is led by an important Surrealist drawing by Joan Miró from 1928, and a beautifully understated Cubist still life collage by María Blanchard. The earlier Impressionist period is represented by a charming and remarkably bright Alfred Sisley riverscape pastel and a dramatic monochrome beach scene by Claude Monet, executed in black crayon. Featured on the cover of the sale is the arresting drawing by Henri Matisse of the sitter Monique Mercier, illustrating the artist’s skill as a great draughtsman.
There is an extremely rich offering of works by German artists, including two superb gouaches by Wassily Kandinsky and beautiful still lifes and a landscape by Emil Nolde. Marc Chagall and Amedeo Modigliani are well represented. Another highlight is a rare group of watercolours by Kees van Dongen executed in Venice during his time with the most notorious socialite of the epoch, the scandalous Marchesa Luisa Casati. We are delighted to be offering property from a number of prestigious private collections, including the Branco Weiss Collection The Analytical Eye, and charming works on paper including some wonderful early works by Pablo Picasso from the collection of the late Stanley J Seeger.
We hope you will enjoy browsing through this E-catalogue, and look forward to welcoming you to our London galleries from Friday 14 June.
