Our 23 October sale of Important English and European Decorative Arts achieved $4 million.
Leading the sale was a suite of eleven George III mahogany side chairs after a design by Thomas Chippendale, which brought $245,000. Also performing strongly was a fine and rare George II giltwood picture frame. This piece from the mid-18th century achieved $221,000 - over four times the high estimate.
This October, Sotheby’s will offer an outstanding selection of English and European Decorative arts including furniture, carpets and ceramics with many pieces from distinguished private collections. The sale will feature a Fine and Rare George III Giltwood Mirror in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, an Empire Savonnerie carpet, a German Neoclassical ormolu-mounted mahogany rolltop-desk attributed to the workshop of David and Abraham Roentgen and a Louis XIV ormolu-mounted ebony, ebonized, fruitwood and marquetry commode from a West Coast Estate.
