The sale of Contemporary Literati: Early Ink Masters commanded HK$25.4 million / US$3.26 million, which nearly quadrupled the pre-sale estimate (HK$6.4 million / US$825,000*).
This first dedicated auction of contemporary ink paintings showed the growing strength of this genre. The buyers were especially enthusiastic about this sale’s focus on the early expatriate ink masters who have greatly inspired the most well known and influential ink artists of today. Various artist records at auction were achieved, including the top lot of the sale, Liu Guosong’s Midnight Sun, Fang Zhaolin’s Nature's Grandeur and Wang Jiqian’s Landscape.
This sale presents early masters of Chinese ink painting, who established their careers abroad during the 20th century. It features works by Chen Qikuan, Fang Zhaolin, He Huaishuo, Li Yihong, Liu Guosong, Lü Shoukun, Wang Jiqian, Zheng Weiguo and Zhou Luyun. Ambassadors of both traditional Chinese and Western modern art techniques, their work articulates the philosophy of the literati tradition in the contemporary era.
