Our 8 November sale achieved a strong total of $15.4 million. More than six bidders battled for the top lot, Spanish master Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida's Buscando mariscos, Playa de Valencia, which soared above its high estimate of $1.5 million, selling for $4.9 million - a record for Sorolla at auction in America. Another exceptional result was John William Godward’s Dolce far Niente which brought $1.6 million, far above the high estimate of $600,000. Additionally, our cover lot, Federico Zandomeneghi's La coiffure set a record for the artist at auction when it sold for $1.8 million.
Sotheby’s dominates the market for 19th Century European Art in every measurable way – from the highest sale totals, to the most record-breaking prices, to the best performance against estimate. Since 2010, we have commanded 80% of the market in New York.
Highlights of our upcoming sale include Federico Zandomenghi’s masterpiece, La Coiffure, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot’s epic Les Gaulois, and recently re-discovered works such as Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida’s Buscando Mariscos, Playa de Valencia and Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s The Benediction.
