Contemporary art from the western world has always featured prominently in Hong Kong and Sotheby’s has consistently exhibited Contemporary highlights to be sold in New York or London twice a year. Following the increasing success of the Hong Kong International Art Fair (now Art Basel Hong Kong), the developing government-funded arts and cultural district, international art galleries now join the twice-yearly auction calendar, which Sotheby’s has hosted for almost four decades. In response to the growing demand from collectors and institutions throughout Asia for the highest quality art throughout the year, in May 2012, Sotheby’s launched a gallery space in its Asia headquarters for exclusive selling exhibitions, events, and auctions. The inaugural selling exhibitions, YAYOI KUSAMA – Hong Kong Blooms in My Mind, and Modern Masters, opened to acclaimed reviews and achieved great success. Bringing contemporary art to the forefront of Asia’s art elite, Sotheby’s will offer both Asian and Western contemporary art as the inaugural auction in its new galleries in December called Boundless: Contemporary Art.
Boundless: Contemporary Art will include important works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Thomas Struth, Ged Quinn, Zao Wou-ki, Zeng Fanzhi and Ay Tjoe Christine and will be carefully curated by Sotheby’s worldwide team of specialists for a discerning internationally-based group of collectors. The sale feature a variety of genres including works on canvas, sculptures and editions. Representing the original, the eclectic, the cutting edge and the timeless, this diverse collection is assembled with a focus on the collector as tastemaker and offers a unique combination of art, environment and lifestyle. Embracing the notion that art bridges geography and culture, works in this sale will be carefully juxtaposed to provoke a dialogue between artists from different countries who are wrestling with similar concerns and themes across time. The exhibition setting for this sale will be choreographed to evoke elegant interiors that are well-designed and intimate, compelling collectors to envision how they will live with the art that they can’t live without. This synergy expresses the notion that to collect art is not only a passion but also a way of life, a journey and an experience that is truly boundless.
