Sotheby's 28 of January sale of Old Master and 19th Century European Art offers a particularly fine selection of paintings and drawings covering a wide range of collecting interests. The Old Masters section is highlighted by nineteen paintings from the Cleveland Museum of Art offered in their own single owner sequence. A Madonna and Child by the Master of the Greenville Tondo and Saint Anthony Abbot by Antonio de Bellis lead the Italian offerings, which also feature still lifes attributed to Carlo Manieri and Simone del Tintore as well as a fine Saint Barbara by Giovan Francesco de Rosa and several impressive views of Venice. A strong Dutch and Flemish group includes an evocative Still Life by Jan Davidsz. De Heem, a fine landscape by Jan Hackaert, a portrait by Nicolaes Maes, an oil sketch attributed to Van Dyke, a group of Dutch watercolors of Tulips and an Italianate Harbor by Abraham Storck. Works by Sebastien Bourdon and Louis de Boulogne the Younger are the featured French paintings along with a sensitive study of A Male Saint attributed to Jean-Jacques de Boissieu and a beautiful Portrait of a Lady by Alexis Grimou. The Old Master section concludes with an Edwaert Collier Vanitas and an array of English portraits from a circa 1630 Portrait of Sir Hatton Fermor to Francis Cotes' charming Lady in Blue and an attractive pair attributed to the Circle of Benjamin West.
The 19th Century European paintings and drawings begin with early works such as William Etty's Reclining Female Nude sold by the J. Paul Getty Museum and a handsome Portrait of a French Officer by a follower of Jacques Louis David. Scandinavian paintings play a major role in the sale highlighted by an impressive group from a Private Collection starting with Jens Peter Møller's View from Giesbach at the Lake of Brinzer and concluding with beautiful works by Vilhelm Kyhn, Svend Hammershøi, Hans Brendeklide, Laurits Ring and Peter Vilhelm Ilsted. Also found is a marine by Johan Jacob Bennetter, a lovely Hans Dahl and Paul Gustav Fishcher's Evening Stroll on the Boulevard. Barbizon works include those by Corot, Lhermitte, Jules Breton and Constant Troyon. There are lovely floral still lifes highlighted by an exquisite Antoine Vollon. Genre painting covers a wide geographical area with works from France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Austria, Germany, Poland, Russia, England and Ireland. One of two works by Edouard Charlemont was first exhibited in the famous 1889 Exposition Universelle and a Jean Beraud has been descended directly in the family who first acquired it from the artist. There are several beautiful views of Venice, especially a wonderful Ziem and a Santoro chosen as the back cover of the catalogue. Lovely Belle Époque visions of femininity are captured by Pompeo Mariani, Albert Lynch, Vittorio Corcos and Rogelio de Egusquiza. The sale concludes with marine paintings featuring Montague Dawson and Victorian paintings by Edwin Harris, George Sheridan Knowles and Edwin Hughes.
