This is the first edition, second issue, with the SS's inverted in "ESSAY" on the title page.
The date of publication is 1829, not 1821.
This lot also includes a copy of Mencken's Treatise on the Gods (NY, 1930) with a clipped signature of the author pasted in, and a notebook by Butcher entitled 'My Good Friend H.L. Mencken', 28 pages.
All volumes have been collated and are complete. Volume 1 is in Roscoe's 'b' state and volume 2 is in Roscoe's 'a' state. As noted in the printed catalogue, there has been some professional restoration to the spines. This restoration may also include some later endpapers. Some volumes include neat hand-colouring (vol 3, 6, 7, 11 and 12) although a few examples are crude (vol 1 and 10). Vol 4 has some minor loss to corners of occasional leaves. Vol 13 has some loss to the title-page (supplied in crude facsimile), seventh and final leaf. There is a crude adhesive tape repair to the final leaf in vol 16. The box shows evidence of some restoration with residue of additional glue. One of the curved tops at the head of the front panel is new.
Proceeds from the sale of this lot will go to the National Autistic Society.
