This strikingly handsome design is an example of the sub-type known as Leo Hollandicus, covering the province of Holland only. It was devised by Visscher in about 1611 or 1612. The vignettes of costumed figures (note Simon Stevin's famous land-yachts in the upper right-hand panel), and views of the principal towns and cities of the province, are adapted from Willem Janszoon Blaeu's map of Holland of 1608 (see lot 24).
