Wednesday’s London wine sale, A Private Jayer Collection, brought £1.58 million, double the low estimate, and achieved two new world records. 96% of lots found buyers.
The top lot of the sale, 12 bottles of Henri Jayer’s 1978 Richebourg, sold for £211,500, a record for a case of this wine. Twelve bottles of the 1976 vintage of the same wine set a new record, selling for £108,100. Buyers from Asia dominated the bidding for these rarities from Burgundy, including an 11-bottle lot of Romanée Conti 1972 which also far exceeded its estimate to sell for £49,350. A parcel of Pétrus 1979 sold for £17,038 per case while 7 bottles of The Macallan 1964 attracted strong bids to achieve £9,400.
Stephen Mould, Head of Sotheby’s Wine, Europe, commented: “The £1.58 million sale total, more than double the low estimate, is testament to the quality of this extraordinary cellar. We saw buyers from all four corners of the globe competing to secure rare Burgundy vintages from the legendary Henri Jayer. The 12 Jayer lots alone realised £902,000, with Richebourg 1978 setting a world auction record of £211,500, triple the high estimate. As ever, Domaine de la Romanée Conti and Pétrus were in high demand, contributing to one of the most successful wine auctions ever seen in London.”
This remarkable single-owner sale was assembled by the current owner’s parents, who insisted on collecting the finest wines available. The undoubted stars are the bottles produced by Burgundy legend, the late Henri Jayer, in rarely-seen full, original cartons. There are no less than seven lots of his 1972 Richebourg, offered at £18,000-24,000 per 6 bottles.
Other highlights include 1976 La Tâche and a 1976 DRC Assortment from Domaine de la Romanée Conti, packed in highly unusual original cartons. The collection is not confined to Burgundy – the Bordeaux selection features cases of Pétrus 1978 and 1979 and from Sauternes, Yquem 1971 and 1976. Sought-after whisky from Macallan together with an array of Cognac and Armagnac complete this collection, a time-capsule of vinous gems from the past six decades.
