This original sale, a first at Sotheby's in Paris, brings together several exceptional collections, paying tribute to the taste of the collectors who assembled them.
We are delighted to present for sale a captivating private collection of portrait miniatures. Carefully assembled by two generations of a distinguished Swiss family, many of the works have not appeared on the market in over 30 years. The collection focuses on the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a golden age for the portrait miniature in Europe. It includes examples from all the major centres of production, among them works by the leading exponents of this intimate art - Augustin, Cosway, Dumont, Füger, Isabey and Daffinger. Created in an epoch of tumult and change, these miniatures offer the viewer a very direct engagement with those who lived through this period of European history, not only the monarchs and their courtiers, but also the actors, scientists and others who together made up society. They are a window upon those momentous times.
Also included in the sale is a collection of drawings assembled by Roger Dupin, a connoisseur of the early 20th century. This set consists of beautiful old master works from the French, Italian and Northern schools. The star lots will be stunning watercolours by Cornelis Dusart, Hendrick Avercamp, and a beautiful work by Frans Snyders representing seated monkeys. The auction will delight enthusiasts of 19th-century landscapes with an interesting set of drawings from the Barbizon school, including a majestic watercolour by Henri-Joseph Harpignies and several drawings by Theodore Rousseau and Narcisse Virgilio Díaz de la Peña. A beautiful Díaz Peña painting of Cows frightened by the storm is striking in its spontaneity: it is a vivid study that affirms the romantic and spirited vein of the artist.
