Results Sotheby’s Carpets and Textiles from Distinguished Collections sale was led by a brilliantly colored Seventeenth Century ‘Polonaise’ rug formerly from the estate of King Umberto II of Italy which sold for $790,000. Other highlights from the sale were a Safavid fragmentary rug selling for $75,000 against an estimate of $40,000-60,000 and a ‘Transylvanian’ prayer rug, fought over by several bidders before selling, for almost double the high estimate, at $50,000. The large selection of furnishing carpets also performed well, including a fine ‘Mohtashem’ Kashan carpet also selling for its presale high estimate of $50,000.
Our Collections: European Decorative Arts sale features select groups of English and European furniture, ceramics, and decorative arts from prestigious estates and collectors. Many of the pieces come from residences designed by celebrated decorators, including Alex Papachristidis whose brilliantly-designed Park Avenue interior is featured on the catalogue cover and is represented in this sale as lots 749-775. The modern eclectic interiors created by those designers and collectors produced unique juxtapositions between furniture and decorative objects of different periods and styles. Collections features important collector-worthy highlights alongside decorative furniture and works of art.
