The Regards sur l’Orient auction at Sotheby's Galerie Charpentier in Paris achieved nearly €1.9 million. The second part of Xavier Guerrand-Hermès' prized collection of Islamic art featured prominently in the sale along with a French private collection of Ottoman pieces and a selection of Orientalist sculpture.
A rare and important engraved Ottoman silver cooler stamped with Tughra of Sultan Abdulhamid II of Turkey, from the 19th century, achieved a successful €85,500, while the top lot of the sale was a 19th-century painting from the French School depicting a woman in traditional Ottoman dress, which brought €133,500.
OVERVIEW
Sotheby’s is honoured to present at auction a part of Xavier Guerrand-Hermès prestigious Islamic Art collection. The first part will be sold inLondon on 9 October, and the second part will be auctioned in Paris on 18 November. This ensemble highlights the sumptuousness of the Islamic arts, including manuscripts, ceramics, and metals coming from Islamic lands from Andalusia to India, between the 8th and 19th Centuries.
The auction will also present works by artists that travelled in Algeria and Tunisia, including Paul-Élie Dubois, Émile Deckers and Étienne Dinet who painted a beautiful portrait of two girls in a tree. Orientalist sculpture is also represented with about 15 painted bronze sculptures by the Austrian editions Franz Bergman, a bust by Charles Cordier, Singing Moorish from Algiers, and a group of terracotta by Friedrich Goldscheider.
The auction will be closed by a French private collection of Ottoman pieces by Prieur-Bardin, Barry and an impressive portrait of an Ottoman young girl by Jalabert.
