Maarten ten Holder is the Global Managing Director of Sotheby’s Luxury & Lifestyle Division, overseeing strategy for the categories of jewellery, watches, wine, cars and experiences. Mr. ten Holder has played a pivotal role in the growth of Sotheby’s worldwide business over the last two decades; he organised Sotheby’s first auction in France in 1999, had management positions in the Netherlands and in Italy before becoming Managing Director of Sotheby’s North & South America in 2006 and then Managing Director of Sotheby’s in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa in 2015.
During his tenure, Mr. Ten Holder has overseen some of the most high profile auctions in recent memory, including the record-breaking $119.9m sale of Edvard Munch’s The Scream, the collection of Mrs. Paul Mellon, property from the personal collection of Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire, and the personal collection of David Bowie. He was responsible for numerous landmark sales of jewellery, from the collections of Mrs. Charles Wrightsman and Mrs. Estée Lauder & Mrs. Evelyn H. Lauder, to the record-breaking $175 million sale of jewellery in Geneva in 2016.
An accomplished auctioneer, Mr. Ten Holder regularly conducts sales in all of Sotheby’s major international selling locations in five different languages. Recent high-profiles auctions orchestrated by Mr. Ten Holder include RM Sotheby’s ‘Duemila Ruote’ sale in Milan – the largest automobile collection sale ever staged in Europe.
