Brett O’Connor joined Sotheby’s in 1999. He has been based in Geneva since 2002, sourcing gems for Sotheby’s worldwide Jewellery auctions. Mr O'Connor began his career with Sotheby's in Beverly Hills, California, and was shortly thereafter transferred to Hong Kong, where he was appointed Director of the Western Jewellery department. During his tenure in Hong Kong, Mr O’Connor travelled extensively on the Asian continent to source rare and exceptional Jewellery, which he continues to do today.
Mr O’Connor came to Sotheby’s with broad experience in the jewellery market. He had previously spent four years in the wholesale and retail ends of the jewellery market and five years with major auction houses in New York and Los Angeles. An auctioneer since 2010, he has over 20 years of auction experience on three continents and has been involved with many of the important jewellery collections to have come to auction in recent years. These include the collections of Baroness Eugene de Rothchild, Luisa Fanti Melloni, Maria Callas, Madame Claude Arpels and Lily Marinho, Count Guido Henkle von Donnermarck and Gina Lollobrigida.
He has lectured in the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia, participated on the television programme Antiques Roadshow and has been a contributing editor to the Antique price guide.
Mr O'Connor earned a Graduate Gemologist diploma from the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, California, in 1994.
