Israel Museum, Jerusalem

The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, is the largest cultural institution in the State of Israel and is ranked among the leading art and archaeology museums in the world. In just over 45 years since its founding in 1965, the Museum has built a far-ranging collection through an unparalleled legacy of gifts and support from its circle of patrons worldwide, and today it houses an encyclopedic collection of nearly 500,000 objects, ranging from prehistory through contemporary art.

In the summer of 2010, the Museum completed the most comprehensive upgrade of its campus in its history, including the creation of new galleries, entrance facilities and public spaces, and the complete reinstallation of all of its collections. As part of this process, the Museum conducted an extensive evaluation of its holdings, with an eye toward areas of overlap and opportunities for growth, and implemented a plan to refine and strengthen its collection through the de-accession of a carefully selected group of works. Illustrative of the breadth and richness of the Israel Museum’s Impressionist and Modern collections, the works coming to auction will generate funds for new acquisitions to further enrich the Museum’s holdings in these departments.
