Turner’s 'Ehrenbreitstein' - A Great, Late Masterpiece by the First Truly Modern Painter

Discover how Turner’s revolutionary technique directly inspired Impressionism and presaged Abstract Expressionism, making him the first truly modern painter. One of only six major works by Turner left in private hands, Ehrenbreitstein is more than just a landscape. It brings together two of the most romantic figures of the 19th century, Turner and Byron, as it directly illustrates a passage from Byron’s epic poem “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage”. This magisterial work is a highlight of Sotheby’s Old Masters Evening Sale on 5 July in London.
