Jackson Pollock was the epitome of cool in American art, redefining how an artist could be. In 1950, the Museum of Modern Art acquired their very first work by Pollock and that same year, the artist produced a series of fifteen paintings on sheets of Masonite he’d been given by his brother. From this series, 'Number 12' — an important highlight of Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 12 May 2015 — is a stunning example of Pollock’s ingenuity and mastery.
