Contemporary Titans Reign Supreme

Our February 2015 sale series of  Contemporary Art realised a combined total of £140.4 million ($214 million), the highest ever total for Sotheby's in Europe. Gerhard Richter and Francis Bacon, two titans of contemporary art, dominated the evening auction. Richter’s vibrant  Abstraktes Bild from 1986 sold for £30.4 million ($46.3 million), establishing a new record for any living European artist, while Francis Bacon's powerful self-portrait  diptych sold for £14.7 million ($22.4 million), more than 41 times the price it achieved when it last appeared at auction, at Sotheby’s in 1993.
