Amongst the ink artists who moved to Taiwan after 1949, Zhang Daqian, Huang Junbi and Pu Ru are the most accomplished and renowned, more widely known as “The Three Masters Crossing The Sea”. Pu Ru, cousin of the last Emperor of Qing Dynasty Pu Yi, learnt his painting skills by observing the art collection of the imperial Manchu family. Zhang Daqian combined a wealth of traditional influences with his own creative mastery, producing a large variety of works in his own distinctive style, gaining himself fame both in Asia and abroad. Huang Junbi believed in the inheritance of traditional brushwork while reforming it to express one’s feelings. All three of them are distinctive in style and are highly influential in the Chinese art world in the 20th century. Works by the three ink masters will be offered in the upcoming Fine Chinese Paintings sale in Hong Kong.
