Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, Reflection

Painted in 1915 Reflection is a masterpiece by Cadell with its harmonious and closely-modulated tones of white and grey inspired by the work of Whistler and Manet who Cadell both greatly admired. The model is Ms Don Wauchope who modelled regularly for Cadell during this period.

George Leslie Hunter, The Bay, Juan-les-Pins

Painted during an extended stay in the South of France the painting boldly captures the intense colour and joie de vivre of the Côte d'Azur which Hunter declared was ‘painter’s country’ . John Duncan Fergusson, Paris, 1907

Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, The Pink Azaleas

The Pink Azaleas was the first of Cadell’s works that Harrison purchased in 1926 and it held a particularly cherished place in the collection. When Cadell first visited Croft House Harrison remembered that Cadell walked straight up to it and remarked, “Although I say it myself, you have a damned good Cadell”.

George Leslie Hunter, Houseboats, Loch Lomond

Painted at the end of his career Houseboats, Loch Lomond is an important work by Hunter which demonstrates the modern painting techniques he had absorbed in France and now applied to a uniquely Scottish setting. Indeed, commenting on this series of paintings Hunter’s fellow artist Peploe remarked, ‘That is Hunter at his best and it is as fine as any Matisse.’
