The Highest Auction Price at Sotheby's Achieved by a $157 Million Modigliani

Achieving a remarkable $157.2 million, Amedeo Modigliani’s Nu Couché, 1917, led the $318.3 million Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale on 14 May. The price is the highest ever achieved for a work of art in a Sotheby’s auction. Another salesroom star was Picasso’s Les Repos, a 1932 portrait of his golden muse Marie-Thérèse Walter that brought $36.9 million. Monet’s abstracted vision of the light at dawn, Matinée sur la Seine, fetched $20.6 million. Other notable lots included Georgia O'Keeffe's Lake George with White Birch ($11.3 million), fought over by two bidders, and Mary Cassatt's pastel drawing A Goodnight Hug ($4.5 million), both exceeding their high estimates.
