A New Record for Wyeth in $43.3 Million American Art Sale

Norman Rockwell, Milton Avery and N.C. Wyeth led the $43.3 million Sotheby’s American Art sale on 23 May. All 11 Rockwells offered in the sale found buyers, with Rockwell’s Blacksmith’s Boy – Heel and Toe leading the sale at $8.1 million. N.C. Wyeth's delightful Portrait of a Farmer set a new record for the famed illustrator, fetching nearly $6 million. The auction saw 9 paintings exceed the million-dollar mark, including Milton Avery’s pivotal The Seamstress at $2.2 million. Following the auction, seminal American artist Frederic Edwin Church's masterpiece, Valley of Santa Isabel, New Granada, was acquired privately by The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA).
