  • 18 Karat Gold, Emerald, Cultured Pearl, Diamond And Ruby Pendant-Brooch, Necklace And Cuff-Bracelet Combination, Van Cleef & Arpels. Sold at Sotheby’s New York for $366,500.
    This sensational necklace showcases Van Cleef & Arpels’s signature incorporation of carved emerald. Here, an emerald pendant of 107.5 carats, carved with a floral motif, is framed by round diamonds weighing approximately 3.50 carats. Ten strands of cultured pearls are interspersed by fluted emerald beads, a cabochon ruby and accented by diamonds—to magnificent effect. This remarkable necklace nearly doubled its high estimate at auction in 2017.

  • Fernando Botero, Homage To Bonnard. Sold at Sotheby’s New York for $1,392,500.
    In Botero’s Homage to Bonnard, a woman emerges from the bath, the water still running from the faucet, her face veiled by her hair. Holding a white towel with fine blue lines, she gently bends her torso and reaches toward her foot in a pose characteristic of Bonnard’s many depictions of bathers, perhaps most conspicuously The Bathroom, 1932, in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Here, a tiny shoe and a black gown lie on the floor and a roll of pink toilet paper hangs against the wall – ordinary modern elements that anchor this archetypal rendering of a woman bathing in a middle-class bathroom, possibly in a home in Botero’s native Colombia. At auction, this painting nearly doubled its low estimate.

  • Rolex, Daytona 'Paul Newman' Circa 1970. Sold at Sotheby’s New York for $93,750.
    A Rolex stainless steel chronograph wristwatch like this circa 1970 model is an important building block for any serious watch enthusiast. In the 1970s, Rolex began offering special “exotic” dials on their Cosmograph Daytona models. These watches came to be known as ‘Paul Newman’ models, since the actor is believed to have worn the watch in his 1969 auto racing film, Winning. The 'Paul Newman' dial is characterised by square markers in the chronograph scale and subsidiary dials, in addition to the alternating colouration patterns. In the June 2017 Important Watches sale in New York, this versatile timepiece achieved an above high estimate result for its Florida-based consignor.

  • Andy Warhol, Moonwalk (F. & S. II.405), 1987. Sold at Sotheby’s New York for $262,000.
    This vividly coloured print is among Warhol’s last works. The immediately recognisable picture of Neil Armstrong planting the American flag on the moon gained increased popularity in the 1980s, when MTV used a similar image in its advertising. One of the top lots of the April 2016 Prints & Multiples sale in New York, the work nearly tripled its high estimate.

  • Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, New Flame, 1985. Sold at Sotheby’s New York for $2,408,750.
    A striking combination of the everyday symbols that define Warhol’s Pop canon with  Basquiat’s impulsive graffiti vernacular, New Flame is testament to a high-profile collaboration between these two goliaths of American art. Executed in 1985 and first offered by legendary art dealer Bruno Bischofberger, this vibrant, gestural work captures the unique spirit of New York in the 1980s.

  • Rudolf Stingel, Untitled, 2012. Sold at Sotheby’s New York for $6,875,000.
    Rudolf Stingel’s imposingly scaled Untitled (2012) is a six-paneled, gilded monumental masterpiece. Nearly 8 feet tall and 12 feet wide, Untitled immerses viewers in an encompassing and spectacular vision of the thousands of graffiti inscription Stingel has cast in electroplated copper. The reflective sheen of the surface resists the gaze, like a mirror, making viewers aware of their presence, and their scale, in relationship to the work.

  • Master Of The Madonna Del Ponterosso, Possibly Identifiable As Giovanni Di Papino Calderini, The Madonna And Child With Saints John The Baptist And Anthony Abate And Two Angels. Sold at Sotheby’s New York for $396,500.
    Coming to Sotheby’s from a Florida collector, this sublime tondo by the Master of the Madonna del Ponterosso is an exquisite example of Renaissance painting at the turn of the 16th century. The painting is immaculately preserved and retains the delicate glazes and refined modeling that are often lost over time in paintings from this period.

    The paradigm of Ed Ruscha’s revered Metro Plot series of paintings, Cosmo, Selma, Vine is a nuanced confrontation of the unstable relationship between image, symbol and text. Outstanding within Ruscha’s expansive oeuvre, it belongs to a rare number of paintings which refer directly to Los Angeles, the city that has enduringly inspired his artistic lexicon.
