Marc Chagall captured hearts at the Impressionist & Modern Art Evening sale on 14 November. The top lot of the $269.6 million New York sale was Chagall’s lyrical masterpiece Les Amoureux, which brought a record $28.5 million. The painting, which depicts the artist’s childhood sweetheart and muse Bella Rosenfeld, had been in the same collection since the year it was painted in 1928. Later in the evening, collectors battled for Chagall’s large-scale Le Grand Cirque, which hammered down at $16 million. Ten works by Picasso sold for a total of $46.8 million, and a trio of landscapes by Claude Monet was led by Les Glaçons, Bennecourt, selling for $23.4 million to an Asian buyer.
