”Surrealism is destructive,” said Salvador Dalí, “but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision.” For Dalí and such artists as René Magritte, Man Ray, Joan Miró, Paul Delvaux and Pablo Picasso, that vision without limits meant creating works that were provocative, often startling and entirely new. On 3 February, a sale of Surrealist paintings, drawings and sculpture will be offered at Sotheby’s London. From Dalí’s irreverent take on the Venus de Milo to Delvaux’s psychologically charged interiors these works connect with the viewer’s imagination on the deepest level.
