While the late Tony Duquette (1914–1999) may be best known as a designer of interiors and stage sets, his maximalist aesthetic also extended into jewellery. Like his fabulous rooms, Duquette’s jewels are distinguished by unexpected combinations of vivid colour and daring volume, qualities admired by the Duchess of Windsor, who commissioned one-of-a-kind pieces, and a host of other celebrities and fashion houses who sought out his bold creations. Now Sotheby’s is offering 32 of the designer’s dramatic jewels in a special timed online auction beginning 18 August and continuing through 30 August. Click ahead for a first look at Duquette’s glamourous gems and discover some of his most prominent motifs.
