Such was the creative vision of Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, founded in Paris in 1909, that its influence on theatre design can still be seen today. The ballet company was born of the late 19th century Russian art movement Mir iskusstva, whose members feature in the Russian Pictures sale on 7 June. Through his patronage and nurturing of their talents, Diaghilev helped the artists gain international recognition and established a new global audience not only for ballet, but also for Russian art.
