The late 1950s was a golden period for the Chinese art market in Britain, when collectors like Roger D. Pilkington began amassing pre-war collections of the finest quality. Over a single decade, Pikington acquired a millennium’s worth of Chinese ceramics. This April, his rare and incredibly vast collection will come to Sotheby’s. Approximately 100 lots, the auction will include key pieces from the Song, Ming and Qing dynasties. Featuring imperial objects, jade vessels, monochrome stoneware and more, the Pilkington Collection tells a story of the evolution of Chinese porcelain.
