On View: The Collection of B.Z. + Michael Schwartz

Most young collectors start by dipping a couple of toes in the waters of the art market, learning the process by trial and – as many will later admit – more often error. But unlike virtually all of their peers, B.Z. and Michael Schwartz burst forth fully formed. As collectors in New York in the 1980s, they wisely made career-long commitments to some of the most important figures to come of age artistically in that extraordinary era – Ross Bleckner, Carroll Dunham, Jack Goldstein, Peter Halley, Jeff Koons and Richard Prince. While those artists had a strong and immediate impact, at the time they were not the most obvious choices to acquire in depth. With intelligence and enviable prescience, the Schwartzes have dedicated themselves to supporting artists of complexity and lasting resonance for more than 30 years. Sotheby’s is honored to present highlights from this deeply insightful and powerful collection. – Allan Schwartzman
