A Menu of Masterpieces

“The first course is Fauvist,” said Michael Cirino of the blossom-and-greens strewn plates served in Sotheby’s tenth-floor galleries the evening of 29 April. The culinary showman and his creative collective A Razor, A Shiny Knife worked with chefs at Sotheby’s Sant Ambroeus café to create a museum-worthy dinner inspired by the setting: an exhibition of Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary masterworks. The Fauve salad was based on a Vlaminck landscape, which was further brought to life in a spectacular cascade of dewy tulips and feathery carnations anchoring one of two bars (the other was the equivalent of a sleek contemporary installation). Subsequent courses paid homage to works by Magritte, Warhol, Gottlieb and Twombly. “We can’t re-create those pieces,” said Cirino. “But we can capture the energy and the tone behind them.” Hosts Simon Shaw and Grégoire Billault and their guests, Irving Blum, Sophie Matisse and Adam Gopnik among them, were suitably impressed.
