Four truly historic paintings of the siege and capture of Spanish-controlled Havana by British forces in 1762 will feature in Sotheby’s London Evening sale of Old Master and British paintings on 6 July. Not only were the works executed by Dominic Serres, a founding member of the Royal Academy who became Marine Painter to George III, they also represent some of the earliest views of Havana, painted soon after the last major engagement of the Seven Years’ War, a conflict that involved most of the major European powers. Entirely new to the market, these works have remained in the Keppel family – whose brothers, a general and an admiral, played crucial roles in the British victory – ever since they were painted in the early 1770s.
