Planting Ideas: The Artist’s Garden

In the 19th century, the garden played a vital role as an artistic refuge and a source of creative inspiration. In January this year, the Royal Academy will open its exhibition Painting the Modern Garden, a survey of the role of the garden in the avant-garde art movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As cities developed and modern industry drew people away from the countryside, gardens became idylls for the modern urbanite. A selection of paintings from Sotheby’s forthcoming 19th Century European Paintings sale show that away from the noise and hubbub of the modern metropolis, private gardens and public parks became the muses of European artists.
