The longest reigning monarch of any major country in European history, from 1643 to 1715, Louis XIV left an indelible mark on the political and artistic development of France. Perhaps most fitting for a man whose last words were “Je m'en vais, mais l'État demeurera toujours.” (“I depart, but the State shall always remain.”)
