This December, a sweeping survey of photography's history – from its 19th-century beginnings to cutting-edge work of today – will showcase the expressive breadth of the medium. Assembled by the late financier Howard Stein, 175 Masterworks to Celebrate 175 Years of Photography: Property from Joy of Giving Something Foundation features rich images that have achieved icon status within the history of photography. From daguerreotypes to digital chromogenic prints, the auction includes many of photography's greatest practitioners, such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Edward Steichen and Cindy Sherman. On 11 and 12 December, the collection will be sold to benefit Joy of Giving Something Foundation, an organisation founded by Mr Stein to benefit photographers and photographic education.
