Record-setting Art Nouveau sale in Paris.
PARIS – René Lalique’s bronze sculpture Femme Ailée was the top lot in a sale that demonstrated the unabashed enthusiasm of the Art Nouveau marketplace. The balustrade element from Lalique’s stand at the 1900 Exposition Universelle soared far beyond its presale estimate, finding a buyer for $1.7 million. The sale also achieved a record for a work of art by Lalique with his Papillons et Chauves-Souris pocket-watch reaching $958,000. The $9.6 million sale total sets the new high-water mark for an Art Nouveau collection at auction.
