Schiele’s Lovers sets a new standard.

LONDON - This week's sale of Impressionist & Modern Art in London was Sotheby's second highest such sale ever, totaling £121 million. The top lot, Pablo Picasso’s Femme assise près d’une fenêtre found a buyer for £28.6 million, showing the continued enthusiasm for portraits of Picasso’s great muse Marie-Thérèse Walter. Also among the top lots, Egon Schiele’s Liebespaar (Selbstdarstellung mit Wally), from 1914, achieved a record for a work on paper by the artist at £7,881,250. The portrait of the lovers was one of three Schiele works on paper sold to benefit the Leopold Museum in Vienna, featured in this Sotheby’s video.
