A Monumental Collection: Bordeaux, Burgundy and More

By Connor Kriegel

NEW YORK – While only 343 lots, A Monumental Collection, From the Cellars of a Connoisseur Part I has elicited unprecedented feedback from our clients in regards to the scope and sheer brilliance of the wines on offer. Rarely have I ever heard so many "wows" the day our catalogue has been delivered! There are a number of great wines, but here are a few worth highlighting.

LOT 60. MUSIGNY 1990 DOMAINE LEROY. ESTIMATE $45,000–60,000.

Almost half of the sale features red and white burgundy from the legends: Rousseau, DRC, Leroy, Dujac, Jayer, Roumier Leflaive, Coche-Dury and Ramonet. There is also a focus on the mythical 1990 vintage with eye-popping lots such as a Methuselah of La Tâche (Estimate $40,000–50,000), six bottles of Chambertin from Leroy (Estimate $18,000–24,000), 12 bottles of Musigny from Leroy – 292 bottles produced – (Estimate $45,000–60,000) and six bottles of Musigny from Domaine Georges Roumier (Estimate $26,000–32,000).

LOTS 166249. MASSETO 2004–2011.

From the Côte d’Or we move to Italy, where we find the greatest selection of Masseto in a single sale we have ever seen at Sotheby's – 84 lots, eight vintages, four formats. Owned and operated by the Frescobaldi family, Masseto’s Merlot grapes are meticulously cared for on a seven hectare, hillside vineyard in Bolghieri. These hand-picked grapes produce truly ethereal wines, a must for all Italian wine fanatics.

LOTS 304, 305, 306, 307. ERMITAGE, CUVEE CATHELIN 2003, 2000, 1991, 1990.

The final third of the sale begins with the greatest vintages in Post World War II Bordeaux – 1945 to 2010. A Magnum of Latour 1945 (Estimate $6,000–8,000), a magnum of Haut-Brion 1961 (Estimate $3,800–5,000) and an Imperial of 1982 La Mission Haut-Brion (Estimate $7,000–9,000) are just a few of the perfectly aged large formats available. The hits just keep on coming with Rhone. The Chave is breathtaking – 11 bottles of 1978 Hermitage (Estimate $11,000–14,000), 12 bottles of 2010 Hermitage (Estimate $3,000–4,000) and four different vintages of the Ermitage, Cuvée Cathelin, including five bottles of the superb 1991 (Estimate $15,000–19,000).

This sale may not be the largest in terms of volume, but it features some (if not most) of the greatest wines ever produced. As always – happy bidding!
