HONG KONG – With a wonderful scent, succulence and generosity, wine from Château Palmer ensures delicious drinkability at all stages of its life. In a historic offering at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on 4 June, the first wine auction dedicated to Château Palmer will feature wine direct from the Château and the cellars of Maison Mähler-Besse and Franck Mähler-Besse. But perhaps the greatest highlight: a jaw-dropping 225-litre barrel of Château Palmer 2015, which can be divided into a range of bottle sizes.
A 225-LITRE BARREL OF PALMER 2015, THE EQUIVALENT OF 25 CASES OR 300 REGULAR SIZE BOTTLES, WILL BE OFFERED FOR THE FIRST TIME AT SOTHEBY’S HONG KONG ON 4 JUNE. ESTIMATE HK$500,000–700,000 ($64,490–90,286).
This is the first time a significant collection of wines direct from the Château Palmer cellars will be offered at auction. Emerging in the 17th century, the estate became Château Palmer in 1814, when it was acquired by Charles Palmer, a British Major General who instilled his namesake to see it become renowned throughout London’s aristocratic circles. The château’s current owners: the Sichel and Mähler-Besse families have maintained the prosperity of this grand wine, which is immensely popular with connoisseurs in every country.
“The wines come from three sources: direct from the cellars of Château Palmer; from the historic cellars of the négociant Maison Mähler-Besse; and from the personal collection of Franck Mähler-Besse,” explains Jamie Ritchie, Sotheby’s Wine CEO & President of the Americas and Asia. “All the Mähler-Besse wines have been recently reconditioned at the château and have new prooftags, so this sale represents a unique opportunity for collectors to buy Château Palmer that is both in perfect condition and with perfect provenance.”
THE 225-LITRE BARREL OF PALMER 2015 ALSO COMES WITH A PRIVATE TOUR OF THE CHÂTEAU PALMER VINEYARD AND WINERY, SEEN HERE.
The sale comprises over 220 lots spanning 87 years (1928–2015), and offered for the first time is the 225-litre barrel of Palmer 2015, which equates to 25 cases or 300 regular size (0.75L) bottles. This lot offers the buyer an incredible opportunity to choose any mix of different bottle sizes, from formats as small as half bottles (0.375L) to as large as a Melchior (18L). A label for each bottle will be personalised with the buyer’s name. To complete the experience, this lot also includes a private tour of the vineyard followed by a dinner at the château.
