Château Pétrus 1945, 1 magnum, est. £12,000-16,000.
LONDON - I have been privileged to work at Sotheby's in the Wine Department for the last thirty-three years and the Finest and Rarest Wines auction in London on 23 October must be one of the most eagerly anticipated auctions I have experienced. The first 303 lots are from the former owner of Château Pétrus, Madame Lacoste-Loubat, so to have a collection with this provenance is unique. To be able to offer rarities of iconic vintages such as the 1945 Pétrus in magnum and bottle is incredible, but to have her other properties, including a case of the fabled Latour à Pomerol 1961, is unbelievable. We have never offered a case of the 1961 in London before so, for me, this is a first. The Pétrus and Latour à Pomerol were all relabeled and re-capsuled at their respective Châteaux so their appearance is pristine and they were all re-boxed in new wooden cases.
Château Latour à Pomerol 1961, 12 bottles, est. £40,000-50,000.
In addition to these rarities, we are delighted to be offering cases of another of the late Madame Lacoste-Loubat's properties, Château La Fleur, a St. Emilion Grand Cru. Serena Sutcliffe, MW, her husband David Peppercorn, MW, and all our wine team were thrilled to taste a range of vintages from this Château, from 1989 back to 1959. We were amazed how well these wines showed and Serena's tasting notes can be read in the catalogue. Château La Fleur offers wine lovers the opportunity to savour historic vintages without breaking the bank.
Château Lafite 2000, 6 bottles, est. £5,800-6,500.
The second half of the sale is devoted to a private collection primarily focusing on Bordeaux spanning three decades from the outstanding 1982 vintage to the splendid 2009, including a fabulous selection of the 2000s. All the First Growths are well represented together with a generous spread of the "Super Seconds," a group of wines whose quality and consistency rival the Firsts. The majority of the wines were purchased en primeur and have been cellared under bond in professional storage. Don't miss out on the range of superb Burgundy, including a great selection from Domaine Sylvain Cathiard in the 2008 and 2009 vintages.
