NEW YORK – This autumn Sotheby’s is proud to offer myriad Surrealist works across several sales that explore imagination and reality. Ranging from psychologically intense scenes and portraits to playful, mutating shapes, these works bend and expand the definition of Surrealism. Highlights include Salvador Dalí’s exquisite and luminous Swirling Sea Necklace, originally worn by collector São Schlumberger while she sat for a portrait by the artist; an incredible René Magritte sanguine, which exemplifies the Surrealist predilection for repetition, multiples and the uncanny; a captivating portrait of Adriana Williams by Leonor Fini, who masterfully balances figuration and abstraction; and a three-headed interpretation of the Temptation of Saint Anthony by Leonora Carrington, which was included in Albert Lewin’s film Bel Ami along with other Surrealist works from the mid-1940s.
