LONDON – The incredible story of the Bernheimer family is a tale of resilience and constant reinvention covering four generations. The Bernheimer business started with a market stall in Munich in the mid-19th century and swiftly grew into an illustrious art and antique business. With the rise of the Nazis in the 20th century, however, the family was persecuted and eventually forced to emigrate to Venezuela. They returned after the war to rebuild, with Konrad Bernheimer taking over in 1977 and transforming the company into one of the world’s most important art dealers. In order to hand over the reins to the next Bernheimer generation, and in conjunction with the publication of his family history Great Masters and Unicorns, The Story of an Art Dealer Dynasty, Konrad Bernheimer has decided to sell Burg Marquartstein and part with the collection. Here, he selects some of the most important and intriguing works from the forthcoming sale in London this November.
