Octagonal Dish, China, Ming Dynasty, Estimate: £30,000–50,000.

LONDON – Raised on eight short feet, this dish appears to be completely unique. It is decorated with a mandarin duck in a lotus pond at the centre and with lotus scrolls around the rim. No other example of such form and material appears to have been published. A related circular fluted silver dish dated to the 13th/14th century from the collection of Pierre Uldry is illustrated in Museum Rietberg ZurichChinesisches Gold und Silber: die Sammlung Pierre Uldry, from 1994, and a gilt-silver quatrefoil dish engraved with two chilong, also from the Ming dynasty, is now in the collection of Dingling Museum, Beijing.
