The artist R.B. Kitaj coined the term School of London in the 1970s to describe the group of artists working in London who were pursuing forms of figurative painting in the face of the ever-growing strength of the avant-garde and abstract movements. These included the artists Leon Kossoff, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Michael Andrews and Frank Auerbach – names that today are amongst the most recognised painters in the 20th Century, not just in Britain but internationally.
