NEW YORK - Famous as a musician and a successful business man, Jay Z, otherwise known as Shawn Carter, is also an avid watch collector.

The Geneva watches team enjoyed Jay Z’s shout out to the brand (“New Watch Alert, Hublot”) in his hit “Otis” in 2011, which actually had a monumental effect on Hublot. The watchmaker was swamped with more orders than they could handle as the song went platinum and was played on airwaves worldwide.  

“We could feel an increase in demand, but that demand could not be transformed into turnover because we were out of stock,” says Jean-Claude Biver, Hublot’s Chairman.

The rapper recently collaborated with the brand and launched his own model by Hublot before his show last October in Zürich; not only as an ambassador, but also as a co-designer.

Even though the rap industry is often associated with “Bling-Bling,” The Classic Fusion Shawn Carter by Hublot is understated and available in two different and limited edition versions: 250 numbered pieces in black ceramics and 100 numbered pieces in yellow gold 3N, both polished and satin-finished, 45 mm wide, 90 hours of power reserve, 50 meter water resistance, slim case, black alligator straps and contain a Hublot ultra-thin HUB1300 manually wound movement.

The movement is partially revealed by a unique cutaway dial depicting the Shawn Carter (Jay Z’s brand) logo, which evokes a Maltese cross.

The partnership between the hip-hop mogul and the Swiss manufacturer is set to last five years. As Jay Z is “still the man to watch,” the collection will evolve into more complicated timepieces and a tourbillon is currently in development.

Jay Z is also showing his big heart with this collaboration under his personal name. Based in New York, The Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation encourages students facing socio-economic adversity and will benefit from 25 percent of the sales.
