Born in 1869, Matisse lived his first 31 years in the 19th century.

A favorite motif, goldfish appear in at least 9 of his paintings.

He had 3 children: Marguerite, Jean & Pierre.



Matisse painted at least 25 pictures of Lorette, an Italian model and one of his great artistic muses.

He was 11 years older than his close friend and artistic rival Pablo Picasso.

He purchased Paul Cézanne’s Three Bathers with promissory note for 1,200 francs.

The Swimming Pool (1952) – often considered the culmination of Matisse’s “cut-out” works – measures 54-feet in length and was originally displayed in his dining room at the Hôtel Régina, Nice.

Matisse traveled to North Africa on 2 times, the first trip in 1912 and again the following year of 1913.

Matisse lived in Nice for 37 years.

The artist lived to be 84 years old, passing away in 1954.

The Baltimore Museum of Art hold over 1,000 works by Matisse, making it the largest collection of his work in the world.
