LONDON – We were the first Sotheby’s specialists to set our eyes on the works from the collection of Marina Picasso being offered this February. It was an incredible privilege and the most extraordinary moment! We uncovered a breathtaking group of early academic and important drawings as well as some extremely playful sculptures and ceramics that offer a truly intimate glimpse into the artist’s private world. Through the remarkable drawings and portraits of his lovers and muses Olga, Marie-Thérèse, Dora, Françoise and Jacqueline, you can trace the distinct periods of his life and oeuvre. Other works from the collection provide a wonderful insight into the artist’s rediscovery and transformation of Mediterranean traditions and the renewed zest for life he found in the South of France. Concurrent with this Arcadian theme, the collection also shows the development of Picasso’s artistic styles, his innovatory approach to form and function, abstraction and Cubism.
